Activewear heads into the break season in the lead - Dallas Morning News (blog)

In fashion workout clothes are not just about yoga anymore or about one brand under one roof ala Lululemon. New stores and old brands are deep in the athleisure category and nibbling at Lululemon’s star, including a boutique chain that just opened in Highland Park Village. Bandier was started by former music business big cheese Jennifer Bandier. After she broke her foot, the only pants that would fit over her cast were the stretchy active wear kind. “I had to wear it every day, but I still wanted to look whopping and sophisticated,” Bandier said. An idea was born after she started ordering cool clothing online from companies she found in Australia, Europe and Japan. Bandier carries 25 brands. “You don’t bear up one designer with your other clothing,” Bandier said. “I didn’t want to wear one brand. Her first store opened in 2014 in Southampton and it was followed by two stores in Manhattan. This month, two more opened in Highland Woodland Village and in the Americana in Manhasset on Long Island. Spin, yoga, bar and pilates classes are part of a day of errands, work and entertainment, Bandier said. It’s a lifestyle that demands a new comfort and fashion combination that can function the whole day. Chelsea Collective, a new activewear concept from Dick’s Sporting Goods, has two stores in Washington, D. C. and Pittsburgh and J. C. Penney has put more the rage into its Xersion brand and expanded its Nike collection in women’s and children’s. Several startup brands have emerged to feed the fashion thirst including Zara Terez, Koral and K. Deer. Established designers like Tory Burch have added activewear as a kind in their collections. (For a few years, the industry has been calling the category athleisure and there are reports that the word will be added to the dictionary soon, although I couldn’t encounter an official notice. On a tour of her 2,000-square-foot store in HPVillage, Bandier pulled out several items from her store’s racks that looked entirely appropriate for the work day or even an evening out. Some of the mesh fabric and cuts are too pretty to wear only when working up a sweat, in my opinion. Bottoms are priced at $64 and $98 for a reversible yoke and go up to $200. Matching bras cost $38. Several tops and jackets vary in price. Bandier’s husband Neil Boyarsky, 42, is CEO of Bandier. When they opened their ahead store, both worked the register every day for the first month. “It’s a feel good business to sell athleisure,” Boyarsky said. “I’m not one of those people that pops out of bed and can’t shelved to go running,” Bandier said. The plan is to open four more stores in 2016 and eventually, the couple believes Bandier can adulthood to a 50-store chain. “Fitness is such a great part of my life and I wanted options,” said Bandier, 46. “Now I have a whole count on.
