Docile, Affordable Way to Get Started With Solar Power (with Video) - Mother Earth News

Until recently, we have been relying on a unwed RV battery and our generator for our power. This system was working well as we chose the happiest balance between efficiency and output on our Honda generator so tinder costs have been a modest $50-100/month which you can read about in Starting our search again for solar quickly turned to... Once again, we found that assorted of the same issues we had identified earlier still couldn’t be ignored like the inability to upgrade components like inverters and charge controllers from starter setups to larger systems. Undeterred by understanding our immediate power needs, we still couldn’t be certain of the future system we’d want so buying components was still a gamble. One issue we did hail was the upfront cost of a battery bank. We happened upon a small bank of eight second-hand L16 batteries on Craigslist for $750, which represents a 78% savings over buying new. Buying half a mo hand batteries is not advisable unless you accept that you might be throwing money into the wind. For us, it was worth the risk as we knew when we were ready for solar, we still wouldn’t be in a attitude to spend $8,000 to $10,000 on a battery bank. Just having a battery bank at all would be helpful to store any of the power we could collect. Because we had so little skill with our power needs, we really hadn’t considered portable solar as the systems at first glance seemed far too small. Not to mention the sell for per watt was higher than most other setups once you penciled things out. After doing some quick numbers, sort of quantifying our actual power needs anon, it looked something like this: Our attitude changed from trying to go with a once-and-for-all solar setup to offsetting our generator use. We chose a 120-watt, 12-volt, lightweight kit from Go Power. which has a built-in charge controller, is easy to setup and connects easily to our RV battery via a 12-foot cord. It’s sturdy, the wire scope is generous and it yields about 7. 4 amps of current in full-sun, giving us a little over 1,000 watts of juice throughout the day. Source: www.motherearthnews.com

New solar panel integrates battery storage, inverter, and bright software into a single unit - Treehugger

This startup is reinventing the solar panel, and aims to cut the set someone back of integrating clean power and energy storage to homes by half. Home solar has the potential to reduce, and even eliminate, electricity costs for multifarious people, but even with the rapid advancements we're seeing in solar technology, there are still weak points that can be addressed and overcome, such as energy... But a learner to the residential solar scene believes it has the answer, in the form of a standalone solar and battery unit which can be used singly or connected in an array, and which may be qualified to lower the overall costs considerably. SunCulture's SolPad solar device integrates solid state batteries directly into the solar panels themselves, contribution its users the ability to not only generate their own clean electricity, but to also store if for use after dark or during peak... The SolPad units also incorporate an inverter, which converts the fervency from the DC generated and stored by the device to the AC required by most household appliances, and includes "intelligent software" that communicates with both the users... "SolPad revolutionizes derogatory energy by bringing together the sustainable smart home, solar and energy storage into a simple, gorgeous and integrated symbol. SolPad also makes solar even more accessible for the majority of the global population and its growing energy needs, without the cost of building overpriced grid infrastructure. With our groundbreaking component miniaturization and integration, we’ve transformed solar—much like the smartphone revolutionized the personal computer sector— combining numerous components into a distinguish device that’s significantly less... The SolPad can be used as a single unit, which could be placed on a patio or deck and used only when needed, or can be strung together into a more potent array, which may allow more people to start going solar by purchasing one unit and then... And with the integration of energy storage and software later on in the units, the SolPads can function as a solar microgrid during power outages, which is something that most current solar arrays can't do, due to their automatic disconnection... "SolPad’s flexgrid inverter can automatically locate when to charge from the sun or charge from the local utility grid, adjusting for cloudy or rainy days, as well as changing local tension rates. During the most expensive daytime hours, SolPad Home will switch to stored battery power, then switch back to grid power when rates are low. Flexgrid will also feel when there’s a power outage or blackout and safely disconnect itself from the grid. Once off the grid, SolPad automatically forms a personal solar micro-grid that will board delivering power to specific lights and appliances. The SolPad Home Connect™ system is the most innovative power delivery interface to get power from your roof into your available. Connect is a wire-free system that links two or more SolPad Home panels together on your roof, completely eliminating the impecuniousness for any complicated cabling or wiring, simplifying the installation and greatly reducing cost and installation time. Two versions of the device will be sold, a 'agile' SolPad that can be deployed as needed at home or on off-grid adventures, and the SolPad Home , which is intended for more permanent installations at home. What Size Battery Would You Desperate straits to Power Your House? - Wired

It seems like Tesla might be making a battery for your shelter . Would that be cool. I think so. But why would you need a house battery. I can think of a couple of uses:. For an off-grid house you might like to power it with solar or about power. Unfortunately, neither of these two sources provide constant energy. If you could store the energy in a battery, you could use this during the night or calm weather. Innumerable people keep a gasoline powered generator for their house. I have one that I don’t use too often, but it’s awesome when you need it. What if you had a battery that you could use for your house in times of power outages. It seems like the power companions would like everyone to have a battery. With a house battery, you could reduce power spikes on the grid. When you turn your air conditioner on, it draws a large accepted for a short period of time( here’s an explanation of why the current spikes ). With a battery this current demand could be leveled out (I guess). But that’s not why you are here, is it. You wish to know how big of a battery you would need. Battery Size We need some starting values. First, how long do you want to run your house on a battery. I over Elon Musk (from Tesla) said one week. The next big thing is the power usage. I think a fair assumption is a constant 2000 Watt power convention. Clearly a house would need more than 2000 watts at some point in the day. However, at night you wouldn’t need much power such that the average for the day could be 2000 watts. If you don’t like that value, you can put your own numbers into the calculations. If I advised of the power and the time, I can use the definition of power to calculate the energy stored in the battery. Having the power in Watts is fine (since a watt is a Joule per second) but I need the in days of yore in seconds. Now I can calculate the stored energy in the battery. Sure, it’s a unit of energy but is that a large amount. In order to lift the record, you need energy (to change its gravitational potential energy). That makes a change in energy of about 10 Joules (don’t forget the gravitational acreage is 9. 8 N/kg). Now for the battery size. The dimensions of the battery will depend on the type of battery. The current Tesla vehicles use a lithium ion battery. According to Wikipedia, the lithium ion battery has an energy density from 0. 9 – 2. 23 MJ/L (mega Joule per liter). I would meditate on that Tesla would only use THE BEST BATTERIES. That would put its energy density at 2. 3 x 10. Source: www.wired.com
