So, you fancy to buy battery storage? - One Step Off The Grid (blog)

As a master energy market researcher, Energeia falls into the category of ‘very few households – and especially not those households on a flat tariff – are economically bigger off investing in a battery system. According to its recent two-part analysis on battery storage , Energeia says it is “inevitable” that solar-storage economics will improve, driven by the common vendor/retailer ‘arms race’ and possible changes to tariffs that would improve... For example, things improve at full speed and considerably for households on maximum demand tariffs, but that remains a hypothetical in most states (you can read more about the proposed shift to enquire tariffs here ). In the meantime, a key takeaway... “For most solar storage offerings at the moment …the optimal system is actually circa 1-2kWh,” said Energeia analyst Jacob Kharoufeh at the All-Energy Australia conference in Melbourne last Tuesday. “Initially, until the tariff comes crashing down, there is a niche market for operators offering modular units,” he said. And this is reiterated by Energeia’s Residential Solar and Storage Judgement – Part 2 , and illustrated in their chart, below. “At a battery price of $1,000/kWh, which is close to today’s prices, there is a significant value proposition for a large multitude of households to adopt a smaller 1kWh battery,” the report says. “The first kWh of battery capacity delivers the most value,” it says. “For small/mid-point solutions, there is a significant opportunity today (~2 million households), providing a significant first mover advantage, particularly for the retrofit bazaar. “The small battery total addressable market remains resilient (2. 5 – 3 million households) despite significant battery cost deflation passive, highlighting the economic importance of utilisation and right sizing solutions to maximise customer... At this stage, small battery offerings in the Australian peddle include Enphase Energy’s 1. 2kWh lithium-iron phosphate AC Battery, which as Solar Quotes notes, was designed to be scalable and offers “momentous $/kWh if cycling twice a day. Aquion and Sonnenbatterie both also offer smaller, scalable battery units, at 2. 2kWh and 2kWh respectively. On Aquion, Solar Quotes says it is a faithful price per kWh, “modular, environmentally friendly disposal, inherently safe chemistry (low fire risk compared to lithium ion)” and is also present in a 24V version, which enables the use of lower cost... The solar and storage developer. The second view we will look at comes from Bjorn Sturmberg, who is a co-stumble and director at Kairos Power , a community solar and storage project manager, and a postdoctoral researcher at Macquarie University. One Step Off the Grid regulars may disown Bjorn from his efforts in project managing the installation of 30kW of rooftop solar and a 43. 2kWh Enphase battery storage system at an eight-unit schoolboy housing co-operative in the Sydney suburb of... Sturmberg says his advice to “early adopters” looking to get battery storage – which he believes will “revolutionise nursing home energy supply – is born out of his experience with the Stucco housing co-operative, particularly the procurement decision... “Currently, the vigour storage market is still in a self-confessed early adopter phase: there’s plenty of potential and excitement, however there are also plenty of risks that have not yet been fully resolved. Tech go over again: Portable Weego JS12 can jump your car's battery - Dallas Morning News

I’m obsessed with power. Not the majesty-of-the-world kind of power. I mean the keep-your-phone- charged power. Sooner or later, the world is going to run on battery power. My guesstimate is that most cars will be electric in 50 years. Solar power relies on batteries to store the energy for later use. And I can’t think of too multitudinous people who don’t plug in at least a cellphone each day to charge up its battery. Rechargeable batteries and external battery packs have really taken advantage of advances in technology. Batteries are smaller and more strong than ever, and consumers are starting to see some real benefits. I’m not sure anyone realized how big a part rechargeable batteries would play in our daily lives. I’ve been using and testing individual external rechargeable batteries the last few years. I’ll admit I’m a battery geek. I’ve also been carrying jumper cables in my car for 35 years or so. Ably, there was a year or two a decade ago when I carried a self-contained jump-starter, but it was almost as big as a car battery, it weighed a ton, and it didn’t keep a charge... Today we have batteries that will fit in your back pouch that can charge your cellphone or jump-start your car. I’ve been testing the Weego JS12 Jump Starter ($129. 99, myweego. The JS12 is the midsize version of Weego’s line of jump-starters. It holds 12,000 milliamp-hours of battery power, and it can jump-start any gas apparatus up to 6. 4 liters and diesel engines up to 3. 2 liters. It will start all but the biggest cars and trucks. If you have a greater need, Weego makes a skilful model called the JS18 that can start gas engines up to 9. 6 liters and diesel engines up to 4. 8 liters. The JS12 has a starting current of 200 amps and zenith current of 400 amps. It looks like most other external battery packs. It’s a black box that’s 6. 25 inches by 3 inches by 1 inch. There’s a anchorage under a rubber cover that’s used to connect the included red and black clamps to your vehicle’s battery. The cables are not very long, so you’ll be resting the JS12 on top or rather near your car’s battery when you use it. The JS12 gets its power from an included wall plug or 12-volt car adapter, and it takes about three hours to charge. Weego says the battery is secure for 1,000 charge cycles, and it loses 2 percent to 5 percent of the charge per month while in storage. It can provide power in temperatures from -4 to 140 degrees. The JS12 is also an exterior battery that can charge your smartphone, tablet or any other device powered by USB. Weego includes a 3-in-1 charging cable that has Apple Lightning, Apple 30-pin and microUSB connectors. The JS12 also has a 19-volt create, which is enough power to charge most laptops. There are eight laptop charging tips included, but there was not a tip for my Apple Macbook Pro. The JS12 has enough power to guardianship my iPhone 6S seven times. Weego also included a flashlight, which is handy for jumping a battery at night. I think the JS12 is useful enough that I’m going control one in my car’s tool kit for its jump-starting ability. I don’t often need a jump, but I’ve been asked to provide one on more than a few occasions. I carry smaller and lighter external batteries in my computer bag for charging my phone, but it’s textile to know the JS12 can do that as well. Pros: Powerful battery. Charge lasts months. No tip for charging my Apple laptop. Source: www.dallasnews.com
