New Karma Revero is not just a Tesla wannabe - The Australian Monetary Review
Deja vu happens habitually in the car world, especially when old names rise again as "new" models and brands. On Thursday night in Laguna Beach, California, Karma Automotive debuted the 2017 Karma Revero, a $US130,000 ($171,840) four-door sedan that looks nearly indistinguishable to the Fisker Karma sedan conceived by Henrik Fisker. Despite such fans as Justin Bieber, the company fell into bankruptcy three years ago. Now, under the managing of parent-company Wanxiang Group, we have a new Karma, take two. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss There are also unique, hand-painted emblems on the face and rear of the body that signify the update. Inside, the Karma's infotainment system has been streamlined so that it is more intuitive and simpler than its predecessor, and functions such as Apple CarPlay are also new to the Revero. The car does not have several comforts we require from a car at this price point (panoramic sunroof. optional all-wheel drive) but Bluetooth, park assist, multiple USB ports, Steering, and interior trim made from real "reclaimed wood" all come standard. It's fast - for a hybrid THe Revero has three drive modes and regenerative braking. It gets the of a piece of 403 horsepower on its rear-wheel-drivetrain, which includes a 260-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine sourced from GM and a 21. 4 kWh lithium ion battery. Top expedite is 125 miles per hour, with a 0-60mph sprint of 5. 4 seconds, or. 2 seconds slower than the $US93,200 Porsche Panamera S E-Cross-breed. The car's solar-cell-covered roof helps it reach a total driving range of 300 miles. electric-only range hits just 50 miles. You can care it to 80 per cent of capacity in 24 minutes, if you have a special charger. Using a 120-v, 16-amp charger, it takes 10 hours. Yes, unlike the like Caesar's wife-electric plug-in Tesla Model S and Model X SUV, which are excellent vehicles, the Revero uses electricity, gas and solar power to run. "It will be the first car sold in the US powered by tension, gas and solar," company execs repeated like a mantra in press materials and statements. In fact this new Karma Revero straddles the Old Era (engaged analog driving) and New World (alt-fuel energy and auto-drive), rather than forcing any sort of new electric mutiny. It's not just a big computer on wheels was the message at the debut. That's in stark contrast with Tesla, which founder Elon Musk has often said is meant to join in combat owners more like an iPhone 7 than a conventional V8. Jim Taylor, Karma's chief revenue officer, spoke specifically about the Revero as a easygoing driving... Reports of Karma company executives in tears at the debut reinforced the brand's reputation as one for true-believing compound devotees. Karma Automotive hasn't yet allowed press drives of the car, and it hasn't specified when production will begin, but it is taking pre-orders. Source: www.afr.com
Solar trains to Mars and oyster-raising toilets: the best green innovations of the week - edie.net
Saturday 3 September: the day we sure to save our planet, according to US President Barack Obama, as China and the US officially ratified the Paris Agreement . The globe is now closing in on the butt of having 55 countries worth 55% of... The historic announcement was met with envious glances from across the pond, as both the Munificent Democrats and the Labour party here in the UK called on the Government to ratify the deal as soon as possible. While Prime Minister Theresa May has kept her mood-cards close to her chest during her first few months as Prime Minister, there is a growing belief that more could be done to improve the UK’s energy and environmental prospects – as captured by... If May’s residency does spread disillusion among the green groups, then there could be a chance for Jeremy Corbyn to step in. The Labour leader recently unveiled his liveliness and environment manifesto , which – depending on which side of the fence you... But while the political debate rages on, the private sector has continued its r of carrying the low-carbon flag in the UK. Gatwick announced it would become the first airport in the world to generate energy from an onsite enfeeble facility plant ,... So, as politicians attempt to align national ambitions with the increasing willingness of the private sector, edie has pulled the vanquish innovation stories of the week into this neat and tidy little green package. The concept of vertical farming and green walls – which have featured in this route-up before -usually revolve around futuristic, Tower of Babel-esque designs the push farming and plant life up shortly before the skies. The New York City Economic Development Corporation has recently approved the development of the Lowline project, which will see an abandoned Manhatten trolley Channel Tunnel filled with exotic plant life from around the world. While London’s underground farm uses LEDs to source sustainable herbs and vegetables, Lowline will generate an underground park home to 100 varieties of plants, such as herbs, pineapples, strawberries, and lemon trees. The park - set to be completed in 2021 - will use logical light, siphoned from the streets above using rotating mirrors and solar collectors. By using the mirrors to follow the path of the sun, the lighting system loses just 7% of the sunlight rapt, creating a natural eco-system underground. While New York could be using sunlight to power its underground greenhouse, individuals could soon be using it to charge ambulant devices during journeys. Innovators XD Design have introduced the Solar Charger, which essentially turns any window into a renewable energy source. The charger first uses solar vitality to charge an internal lithium battery, which then sends electricity to a mobile device connected by a USB cable. It uses an adhesive surface to remain attached to car, train and office windows and can charge a smartphone up to 60%. XD Design actually offers a range of different solar chargers, from handy chargers for mobile devices to tree-shaped solar collectors... The silicone paper that sticks to surfaces is also durable, providing multiple uses across contrastive windows. At first glance, a cruise ship powered by wind and solar doesn’t seem that impressive. after all we’ve already seen the world’s largest solar boat at COP21. Source: www.edie.net
UCS Criticism: Auto Manufacturers Aren't Bringing Enough EVs To Market, A Barrier To Wider Adoption - CleanTechnica
A new breakdown of the electric vehicle market from the Union of Concerned Scientists has found that a major barrier to wider, faster adoption of the technology is altogether that auto manufacturers aren’t bringing enough models to market. Also, the electric vehicle (EV) models that are available aren’t widely present — and can be hard to find even for those who want to purchase them. The new UCS analysis found that, while “automakers vary widely in terms of how many electric vehicle models they suggest and where they sell them, all automakers could be doing more to take full advantage of the potential EV market, especially... In particular, it’s noted that outside of California (where more than half of US EV sales manifest itself) most models simply aren’t buyable — inter-state travel is often necessary for those looking to purchase unequivocal models. “You can’t buy a car you can’t find,” stated David Reichmuth, a vehicles engineer at UCS and the lead author of the new study. “One of the biggest barriers to EV adoption is that too multifarious automakers fail to make electric options available. The future is electric, but when automakers don’t put effort into building and selling these cars, they’re missing out on an evolving trade in. So, how do the different auto manufacturers stack up. How you would expect them to based on EV sales — amongst the majors, GM, Nissan, and BMW are all noted to be making some labour. while Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, Honda, and Hyundai/Kia don’t seem to have done much to date. (Author’s note: Obviously, Hyundai/Kia has now begun to feel for to market changes, though, and will be releasing a fair number of EVs over the coming years. The email continues, noting that, “in 2015, BMW was second only to Tesla (which only sells PR-in vehicles). plug-ins made up 3% of its nationwide vehicle sales, and 7% of sales in California. GM and Nissan were early leaders in the furnish with the Volt and LEAF the top selling plug-in hybrid and battery electric models since 2010. … Toyota had some success with a plug-in version of its amateur Prius model, but currently has no plug-in... Fiat Chrysler has had success in selling its 500e plug-in model in Oregon and California, but does not put up the vehicle for sale in other markets. And Honda has only offered plug-in models in limited numbers over the past several years, with sales since 2011 shame than GM’s EV sales in a single month. It’s kind of amazing when you think about it that a company like Honda would, presumably, miss the boat completely on EVs. Continuing: “While most automakers blurry on the market for electric vehicles in California, consumers in the Northeast are missing out, with fewer models to choose from and fewer vehicles accessible on the lot. Even when plug-in models are available in markets outside California, finding one at a dealership can be a challenge. com showed on average more than 2,800 electric vehicles for yard sale in the Oakland/San Francisco area, but only 317 in the Boston area. “ Electric vehicles have real potential, but they can’t succeed if automakers don’t give customers the time to test drive and buy them ,” commented Don Anair, research and deputy director for the Clean Vehicles program at the Union of... “Stately and federal policies are helping drive the EV market forward, but automakers are in the best position to help Americans access the benefits of driving stirring.
