Beginning Click: Apple says hello, Microsoft Surface all-in-one PC, and more in the week ahead - The Verge
We’ve got two titanic tech events this week starting with Microsoft on Wednesday, followed by Apple on Thursday. Microsoft’s Surface event in New York Urban district is expected to yield new Surface hardware and details about the next Windows 10 software update. What we won’t see is a refresh of the Surface Pro 4 or Surface Soft-cover — instead, we’re likely to see a new all-in-one Surface for the desktop as well as new Surface-branded keyboards and a mouse. But most of the event will be focused on the prospective of Windows 10. Apple’s "hello again" event is on Thursday and is expected to focus heavily on the Mac. Rumors suggest that Apple will highlight the MacBook Pro with a new eager touch control bar that’s meant to replace the existing row of function keys found on current Macs. We’re also expecting refreshed iMacs, MacBook Airs, and even a new 5K standalone watch with the do-it-all USB-C port playing an important role throughout. On Monday we’ll see if rumors of Samsung’s enticing new Chromebook with touchscreen and stylus are true. Before being erased from the internet, the so-called "Samsung Chromebook Pro" was outed on a few retail sites concluding week with a $499 list price and October 24th availability date. On Tuesday we’ve got the announcement of Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2. Already heavily leaked, the wonderful-high specced Note 2 is set to be another example of how Chinese phone makers threaten to erode the premium phone pricing enjoyed by the likes of Samsung... A account in Bloomberg today noted that Chinese companies now ship 40 percent of all phones sold in the $500-and-up category. This week is also a detailed week in tech earnings. We’ve got Apple and Pandora announcing on Tuesday, Nintendo on Wednesday, and Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Snigger, Nokia, and Baidu on Thursday. On Friday, Elon Musk is promising to unveil something new from Tesla and Solar City. Last month Musk said he was targeting the 28th for a "solar roof with integrated Powerwall 2. 0 battery and Tesla charger. Source: www.theverge.com
Smartwatches, Not Closely Selling Well These Days - Droid Life (press release) (blog)
IDC released their latest smartwatch furnish info this morning and it certainly appears to paint a bleak picture for the smartwatch industry. From Q3 of last year to Q3 of this year, shipments of watches dropped 51. 6%. That’s, um, a big taper off. Their numbers show smartwatch shipments dropping from 5. 6 million last Q3 to 2. 7 million this Q3. Part of the drop could be attributed to the fait accompli that the new Apple Watch only arrived with two weeks left in the quarter, but it could also be... Meanwhile, Samsung shipped the same 0. 4 million, while Lenovo, Pebble, and “others” all dropped. Garmin’s follow shipments jumped from 0. 1 million in Q3 2015 to 0. 6 million in Q3 2016. That’s a big jump. Well, maybe people demand fitness gadgets that aren’t doubling as charge-every-day, annoy-my-wrist-at-all-times smartwatches. Maybe smartwatches still haven’t sold most people on why they dire to be on their wrists, but a straight-up fitness tool has. We should point out that Android Wear 2. 0 has been delayed as well, potentially causing Android Harass watch makers to hesitate before releasing new products. Honestly, I don’t know that I believe that Android Wear 2. 0 was going to skyrocket Don sales. Looking at these numbers, I think it’s more likely that few are releasing new watches because few are buying them. Via: Business Wire I have a 1st gen Moto 360. I like it, I cast-off it for about 6 month, but then I got a proper watch for graduation, and it’s too nice not to wear. I found Wear to be a bit laggy at times, and the utility it offered wasn’t that valuable. Yeah, it was neat seeing notifications on your wrist, but is it worth $350+ to not pull your phone out of your pocket. And yet I cannot wait to get the Gear S3. Yes it’s big but I’m okay with that and love everything about it (except SVoice). MST technology in a look for is gonna baffle people all over. Like the style and look too. Smartwatches are a hard sell for new adopters, but once you have one for several months they adorn come of a valuable convenience. When I’m not wearing mine I hate digging into my pocket for every message. I have multiple “dumb” watches that have either held or increased in value over the years (decades even). What smartwatch, machinery that relies on software updates, will do that. Eventually phones have to be upgraded and so will smartwatches. My 20 year old Bulova is still firing and I only have to update it twice a year (sunshine saving time). No way to justify spending smartphone money on a device that basically dumber than a smartphone and typically can’t be used fully without one. I warmth my Gen 2 Moto 360 but mainly because there are plenty of times where it DOESN’T look like a smartwatch, if that makes any sense. I have an Asus Zenwatch (1) and I like it. But I like my Pebble more. Still waiting in it. But I like a uninvolved watch, one I can pair to more than one phone at a time, and do not have to factory reset to pair to a new phone. One I don’t have to swipe this, charge every night that. Apple watches are ladylike, but so dang expensive. I am wanting a watch not a new phone for that price. After the first week or two, all anybody is really using their smartwatch for is to tell the time and number steps, or maybe that’s just me… dunno. Source: www.droid-life.com
