Ronald Kaltenbaugh isn't prepping for the apocalypse, but he's reasonably close to getting off the grid for other reasons. The 52-year-old network engineer lives about an hour from Washington, D. C. , in a four-bedroom tranquil with 69 solar panels, a geothermal heat exchange pump and a garage that houses a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. The carbon footprint of Kaltenbaugh, his bride and teenage daughter is close to zero, and so is their monthly energy bill (actually the $5. 30 a month connect fee, plus about $150 for January and February). "There's less sullying, and from a money standpoint, it does pay you back," said Kaltenbaugh, who lives in Jefferson, Md. During sunny months, the solar panels make more energy than the family uses, so they cater energy to their utility and build... During the cloudy, cold months, Kaltenbaugh taps into that credit. The solar panels also pay for about a third of the ardour needed to run his electric vehicle, which costs the equivalent of 90 cents per gallon to operate and has a 100-mile range. In the poop indeed, across the country, more and more families are linking solar power and electric vehicles for a double-whammy of energy savings. There are about 522,000 EVs on the procedure, while about 600,000 U. S. households are capturing the sun's energy with rooftop solar panels. RELATED: Chinese 'Tesla' Doing Better than Tesla. Somewhere in between is the splendid spot, (or perhaps the shaded part of the renewable energy Venn diagram) that Elon Musk hopes to capture. Musk is the CEO of EV fabricator Tesla and also chairman of SolarCity, one of the country's biggest solar panel manufacturers and installers. Musk tweeted that he would be announcing on Friday a "new Tesla/SolarCity solar roof with integrated Powerwall 2. 0 battery and Tesla charger. " That's a conclude roof with solar panels and an electric power storage battery. 17, Tesla plans to acquire Solar City in a shareholder vote. But will the new renewable vigour giant capture solar newbies or even early adopters like Kaltenbaugh. "At some point, as the cost of battery storage comes down, I would chew over it," said Kaltenbaugh, who is also president of the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington. In fact, rather than buying a Powerwall battery from Tesla, Kaltenbaugh says he expects that he will done be able to use the battery on his own electric car if the electric grid goes out during a storm or demand outage. All that's missing now is the proper federal and state regulations that would allocate a smoother transfer of energy from rooftop to battery to grid, a flow that won't electrocute repair workers during power outages. While Kaltenbaugh took a DIY technique when he installed solar panels on his home in 2003, many Americans find themselves confused with both the technology and financial equations. That's where Anya Schoolman comes in. She directs the Community Power Network , a non-profit that helps put together co-operative buying groups for solar power in five states and the Quarter of Columbia. "Every year, more and more people want to do it," Schoolman says about installing solar panels. RELATED: Neighbors Got Solar Panels. Schoolman and the network have organized 80 co-ops with 1,400 homes in the existence few years. Her work in helping low- and moderate-income families go solar has been recognized by the White House. Solar co-ops are active in several dozen states, while " Solarize " co-ops funded by the U. S. Unit of Energy and state governments have. Source: www.seeker.com

“The Giraffe 2. 0 end up-solar power station is suitable for a variety of applications. It can charge a summer cottage, a house, provide hot water, light, power electronic kit – either connected to the grid or in remote locations, e. g. , replacing diesel generator (with a suitable battery backup). In urban environment Giraffe 2. 0 can purpose as a charging spot for electric vehicles, as a bus station (self-contained or utility-connected) or as an educational renewable energy solemnization. According to the company website, a Giraffe 2. 0 can be yours starting at about 55,000€ (~US$60,800), and installation is said to be “relatively quick and easy” years all the pieces of the wooden skeleton are assembled. Solar panels owners caught between a stagger and a hard place - ABC Online

David Walker did his enquiry before installing a five kilowatt solar panel system at his home in Bicton south of Perth last year. He generates three times the amount of verve he uses and like tens of thousands of other households in WA, Synergy pays him a tariff to feed his excess energy back into the grid. But since 2010, the amount Synergy pays customers for their residual power has been slashed. "The feed in tariff is less than a third of what we import, the cost of electricity, so we have to export a lot to break even on it," Mr Walker said. "We could have got away with a three kilowatt structure but the five kilowatt means that we actually kind of help to pay off the cost of the capital. Customers who got in early signed up for 10-year contracts under 'The perquisite Feed-in Tariff Scheme'. For contracts signed between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 customers are paid 40 cents per element of power they feed back into the grid. The tariff was then reduced to 20 cents for contracts written between July 1, 2011 and August 1, 2011. New customers are now paid just 7. 135 cents per section under the Renewable Energy Buyback scheme and have to buy electricity back at night for 26... So Mr Walker investigated getting a battery to reduce how much power he needed to support overnight, but under current regulations that would cut his tariff altogether. "When I got this system, I asked about future fitting in of batteries when those prices came down and they said you'd constraint a battery charger that sits in between the inverter and the battery," he said. "Now I already have a five kilowatt inverter which is the maximum allowed to still be eligible for the tariff, as soon as you add this other monogram, it's also considered an inverter and puts me over the limit, so then I don't get any feed-in tariff. "It means that I don't get anything for any of the power I export and that just increases the time to pay off the capital tariff. Batteries not yet the answer It all comes down to a technical rule. The regulation limits the size of household solar systems to five kilowatts of power, by adding a battery, the Administration said that takes them over the limit and rules out the feed-back deal. "I would have thought that they would increase the limit when people do put in batteries because then you're smoothing out the power that you're exporting to the grid. "My perception is that the five kilowatt limit is because you've got a major peak in the middle of the day when you're injecting power into the grid and that presents a problem for management of the network. "But with a battery of ambit you can reduce those peaks by using that power to charge a battery and then continue exporting it after the sun's gone down", Mr Walker said. Battery installers said the standard would affect most households that installed renewables early. "So, what you're looking at is a lot of people who have existing systems that are now unable to install batteries due to this provision. "Those people on single phase systems, which is most houses in Western Australia, who have a five kilowatt inverter system already installed, unfortunately they aren't gifted to increase the size of that inverter system and so that precludes them... The government said it had taken several steps to make it easier for customers to initiate batteries but would not use. Source: www.abc.net.au
