Multitudinous of the refugees and migrants here -- mostly young, single men from Afghanistan -- walk to a shop or gas station up to an hour away, hoping that buying a coffee or nosh will win them access to a power outlet. Most times they don't. Life on the edge Thousands of refugees trapped in Serbia are deliberately artificial to live in squalor, with no access to even the most basic technologies. CNET Senior Reporters Shara Tibken and Joan E. Solsman saw firsthand how tech is defect people desperate to continue their journey farther into Europe. Tesla has periodically updated its top-end vehicles with higher perception batteries, and the company may be prepping to do it again — this time by bumping its 90kWh vehicles up to 100kWh. These rumors spread earlier this year when a Tesla fan found divulge of a P100D product buried in the vehicle’s firmware, but this time we’ve a more official source. RDW, the company that certifies Tesla vehicles for sale within the EU, recently published listings for new Tesla variants including a 100D and 100X — and that would be in shilling-mark with Tesla’s current product line-up and nomenclature. Last year, Tesla announced that it expected battery capacity to improve by around 5% per year, so introducing a 100D would indicate an acceleration of that timeline — though whether or not the company can maintain the pace is a matter of conjecture. A 100kWh battery would be an 11% repair over current models and would give the Model S a range of up to 381 miles, according to the EU’s regulations, which aren’t as strict as ours in the US. The EPA rates the Model S’s 90AWD alternative at 294... a linear increase in mileage based on the battery’s additional capacity would be 326 miles. Historically, Tesla has used these episodic capacity bumps as a method of differentiating between its current products and putting older hardware out to pasture. Not long after it introduced the 90kWH deviating, Tesla stopped selling the 85kWh variants it had previously offered. And, so far, the company gets away with it. . How do Europe's premium carmakers, and particularly the German luxury brands, fight against a rival like that. The truth is they can't -- at least not as long as Tesla remains a money-losing boutique manufacturer of extra sports cars propped up by investors. "You can't compare a 130-year-old company shaped by German engineering ingenuity with a startup from Silicon Valley. Teeth of those differences Audi, BMW and Mercedes are joining Porsche in the race to provide a response to Tesla's success. Audi plans to begin a dedicated electric model in 2018. Mercedes will showcase its Tesla fighter with a concept car this month at the Paris auto show. Mercedes also plans to generate a subbrand for electric cars that will offer two electric SUVs and two battery-powered sedans, people familiar with the plan told Bloomberg persist month.
