Least and Most Infallible Washing Machines - ConsumerReports.org
As washers became more complex machines crowded with useful features, they got better at cleaning while using less water. But breakage rates are surprisingly high for some, ranging from an estimated 14 to 29 percent by the fifth year of ownership. Consumer Reports’ latest investigate reveals which brands are more likely to break and which make the most reliable washing machines. We asked more than 69,000 subscribers about their experiences with washing machines bought new between 2008 and 2016 and accounting for use and amenities contract coverage. Unlike our breakage data, our repair cost data does not control for the age of the machine, use, or service contract coverage. Incendiary top-loaders. Speed Queen stands out as a reliable brand, while Fisher & Paykel is more prone to breaking than others. Estimated breakage rates for firebrand washers range from 14 to 26 percent, and the median out-of-pocket repair cost is $112. High-efficiency top-loaders. No brand name stands out as being the most or least reliable HE top-loader, the kind without an agitator. Estimated breakage rates range from 19 to 24 percent, and the median fettle cost is $140. . Front-loaders. LG and Samsung are among the more reliable brands, while Frigidaire is more prone to breaking, so much so that we can’t recommend Frigidaire face-loaders for now. Front-loader breakage rate estimates vary from 18 to 29 percent, and the median repair tariff is $136. To make our recommended list washers cannot have brand reliability issues. Additionally, high-efficiency (HE) top-loaders must win a score of 71 or higher and agitator top-loaders have to score 51 or higher. “Agitator washers, as a group, do not perform as vigorous in our tests for cleaning, water and energy efficiency, gentleness, capacity and noise, although they’re faster,” says Emilio Gonzalez, the swing who oversees our tests. So we set the bar lower for these machines, knowing that some consumers prefer agitator washing machines. None currently in our washing machine Ratings go the recommended list. For years I've covered the increasing water- and energy efficiency of washers and what it means to consumers, along with the revolution in the lightbulb aisle—force-saving LEDs. What I'm really trying to do is to help consumers, and consumers help me by posting comments and posing questions. Source: www.consumerreports.org
How to Scrub Your Washing Machine - ConsumerReports.org
Cleaning an appliance that’s designed for cleaning might appear a little counterintuitive. But for a washing machine to do its job effectively and efficiently, it needs regular care and attention on your part. That’s especially true for front-loading washers, since their blueprint creates trouble spots that, if left unchecked, can lead to funky mold and mildew , plus the attendant odors. Manufacturers have made some improvements to fa-loading washers to address the problem, but if you’re used to doing laundry in a top-loader, you’ll need to make a few key adjustments, following the steps listed below. Top-loaders, whether the standard kind or a newer high-efficiency model, will benefit from many of the same measures. After each wash in a front-loader, wipe down the door and the rubber gasket that surrounds it with a fabric. Tip: attach a magnetic hook to the side of the washer to hold the cloth as a reminder, and so you’re not constantly looking around for one. In between loads, it's also a permissible idea to leave the washer door ajar. Some newer front-loaders have a special latch that leaves the door measure ajar (on the LG WM3370HWA , a standout model in our current Ratings , it’s referred to as magnetic door plunge). In households with small children, we coax locking the door to the laundry room to prevent them from accessing the open washer. If your machine has an automatic soap dispenser, as all front-loaders and tons new top-loaders do, periodically clean it out to prevent soap buildup, which contributes to mildew and bad odors. That goes for detergents designed for high-expertise front- and top-loaders, as well as conventional top-loaders. If that’s the case with your laundry detergent of choice (check our laundry detergent Ratings for the latest winners) use a marker to highlight the make full line. Every few months, sanitize the inside of the machine. Start by adding about 1 cup of bleach to the bleach dispenser, or directly into the machine if you have an older miniature without a dispenser. Then run a hot wash cycle without laundry. The disinfecting bleach will kill mold and mildew spores that thrive in the warm, wettish, dark environment provided by all washing machines. If you’re in the market for a new washer, look for a top-scoring model from our washing machine Ratings with a special tub-cleaning circle. The feature is designed to prevent odors and mildew by removing detergent residue. Although you’ll still need to follow the steps above to husband the machine sparkling clean.
