Breaking bad sniffles: Crystal meth made cold medicine bullshit - New Scientist

Cold medicine doing spoonful to relieve your bunged up nose. That could be because a crack-down on chemicals that can be used to make crystal meth has meant some high-drive cold medicines may be no better than placebo for relieving congestion. Nine years ago, you could have walked into a shop on the UK high street and bought a pretty penny of cold medicine that contained the decongestant pseudoephedrine. This drug has been used for decades, and works well, but in 2008 it was placed under tight controls when it became ostensible that pseudoephedrine was being used for the illegal production of methamphetamine. Similar laws were introduced in the US in 2005. Since then, pseudoephedrine has broadly been banished from workshop shelves in the UK, the US and elsewhere. Today, you can only get products containing this compound either by obtaining a prescription, or asking a pharmacist for a packet from behind the table. Confusingly, popular cold remedy Sudafed – which takes its name from pseudoephedrine – now comes in two forms: a shop version, containing phenylephrine, and a behind-the-chip pseudoephedrine version. Investigation: Over-the-Counter Cold Medications Linked to Dementia - Newsmax

Late research has shown a possible connection between dementia and popular over-the-counter medications, CBS New York reports. Long-term use of an antihistamine known as diphenhydramine, which is in innumerable popular sleeping aids, as well as medications for cold and allergies, can even cause irreparable harm. One such study by Indiana University scientists showed they caused a reduction in wisdom functioning and smaller brain sizes, Health Newsline reports. Researchers found that those taking drugs which contained promethazine and diphenhydramine did not do as famously on short-term memory tests than those who did not take the medications. They also did not perform as well on executive function tests, including fine kettle of fish solving and planning, than the other group. Stanford Psychiastrist Barbara Sommer, an expert on anticholinergic drugs such as diphenhydramine, told CBS, "Whereas it's always been reflection if you stop anticholinergic drugs, all of the cognitive functions you've lost come back, now people... However, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, which represents the makers of over-the-chip medications used in the research, said in a statement:. Source: www.newsmax.com
