The classroom is a teeny quieter than it once was. Students pass out papers and write on the board — a task math teacher Donna Myhre if ever performed. When Myhre drops something, at least one child is always there to pick it up for her. Desks are organized so that her wheelchair can get by, though most times, students announce their way to her. This is the new order in Myhre’s sixth-grade classroom at Fieldstone Middle School in Montvale. For nearly a decade, she was a self-described “wacko” who theatrically taught equations and trust and respect, those who know her say. Now, nearly four years since being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Myhre must use an electric wheelchair to get around and can’t be obvious loudly because it requires too much energy and makes her lose her voice. “Those are the differences, not in the instruction,” Myhre said. “Maybe a student from 10 years ago would come and see a incongruity. Her teaching style may be a bit tamed, but her impact continues unabated. “I wasn’t the biggest fan of fifth-evaluate math,” said Brandon Quinn, one of Myhre’s students. “Sixth grade math is my favorite. … She inspires me to learn math. Brandon’s dam sees a difference in him as well. “I don’t know what she does,” said Donna Quinn. “And it’s not just my kids, it’s all the kids. By all accounts, Myhre has always been popular with parents, students and discipline. Principal Eric Parks calls her one of the school’s most beloved teachers and a leader among her colleagues. He never doubted she could carry on with to be effective in her job. Myhre’s ability as an amazing math teacher,” he said. Since disclosing her disease in September 2014, Myhre has been overwhelmed by the retaliation. ” she said before pausing and trying to find the right words to explain what it’s like to be on the receiving end of so many accolades. Now with a 2-year-old daughter and in a wheelchair choke-full time, she continues to teach not only for the practical reasons of paycheck and insurance, but for the mental and physical effect it has on her. It occupies your mind,” she said. It also helps her conflict the disease. “Honestly, if I did not have to move as much as I do here, I would deteriorate much more rapidly,” she said. Let’s just say, it’s needed for a lot of reasons. Others are amazed by her ability to not focus on her healthfulness or her situation. “She’s always positive, even if the days are so hard,” said Kelly Quinn, Brandon’s twin sister.
