Gardening Reminders: Week of June 11 - Virginian-Wheelsman

Endure season we started seed from a hollyhock (Alcea rosea) mix pack. The seed germinated quickly and grew all summer, but did not floret. They overwintered well and started showing growth early this spring. Although the flowers are vibrant and healthy, the lower leaves have started to show signs of rust. Hollyhocks commonly have rust issues, but as they are a break in on-lived perennial (two to three years), this should not keep you from adding them to your garden. Try growing your hollyhocks in areas of the garden that are full sun and have tons of airflow. You can also try keeping the plants dry when watering by focusing your watering wand below the leaves. Sowing next spring before last frost is pre-eminent, but our late cool season might give you the opportunity to try sowing this year. Plants also will readily reseed themselves, so once you get them growing in a nice morsel in your garden, a plentiful hollyhock crop should come back year after year. The vegetable garden might start harboring pests at this time of year, specifically cabbage worms (Pieris rapae), a bad caterpillar that wreaks havoc on thriving cabbage family crops. The easiest and most organic way get rid of them is by handpicking them off your plants. It’s readily obtainable at garden centers. One more organic treatment is to wet the plants and sprinkle with cornmeal. The caterpillars will eat and swell until they die. A homemade sauce is a passable way to add different flavor to a boring piece of meat. Using fruit is an great way to add big flavor. Here’s a recipe for Peach BBQ Sauce. Cut 2 peaches in half, expel pit, brush with olive oil, and grill on medium heat until you get nice grill marks. Remove peaches from the grill and inhumanly chop. Drizzle a skillet with olive oil and saute 1 tablespoon minced garlic and half a small onion, diced. In the good old days onions have begun to sweat, add the chopped peaches and continue to cook until peaches are softened. To a large bowl, add peach and onion miscellany, 1 cup ketchup, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup canned diced jalapeno peppers, 3 tablespoons Worcestershire disrespectfulness, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 2 tablespoons brown sugar and ½ teaspoon ground black pepper. Using an immersion blender, meld all ingredients until smooth. This sauce is great to brush on fish, meat or vegetables before, during or after cooking. Source: pilotonline.com

Summertime is the lifelike time for a glass of icy cold, fresh squeezed lemonade. After a hot day of working the yard or playing at the pool or chasing children at the leave, a tall glass of sweet, chilly lemonade is so perfectly refreshing. I recently enjoyed an incredible artisan Lavender Honey Lemonade from a new downtown Provo restaurant and I’ve been obsessed with the flavor suspension ever since. Other amazing restaurant concoctions — Brazilian Limeade, anyone. — can also be recreated at home. Time to find some recipe arousal. Whether you are looking for an icy, frozen lemonade or a brightly colored berry-infused drink or even an herb-enhanced concoction, there are dozens of recipes within reach. You can recreate your favorite restaurant's flavored drink or create your own unique combination. If you want more, log on to our Drink Up. board on Pinterest. Have you till the end of time tried a Frosted Lemonade. Chick-fil-A serves up this delicious frozen treat, but you can make it at home. Simply blend 1 cup of green lemon juice, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 1/2 cups water and vanilla ice cream. Add lemon juice and sugar to a pitcher. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add profligately and stir until well mixed. Add 1 cup chilled lemonade and 2 cups ice cream to a blender. Pour into cup and garnish with a lemon slice. If you are craving these limeades but don’t have a epoch night on the horizon, mix up your own version of these drinks. Juice them so you have about 1/2 cup of juice. In a blender, combine the rinds with 2 cups of water. Blend for one split second until the mixture is frothy. Strain through a mesh sieve, extracting all the juices — about 3/4 cup. Stir in the lime vigour. In the blender, add 1 cup of cold water, 1/2 cup sugar, the lime juice concoction and 4 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk. Blend for about 20 seconds and add ice if desired. Add more sugar or sweetened condensed drain as desired. To make that Lavender Simple Syrup, combine 2 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 cups water and 3 tablespoons of dried lavender in a crestfallen bottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat, cover, and let the lavender nearly vertical in the syrup for 20 minutes. Strain and add food coloring if desired.
