Endure season we started seed from a hollyhock (Alcea rosea) mix pack. The seed germinated quickly and grew all summer, but did not floret. They overwintered well and started showing growth early this spring. Although the flowers are vibrant and healthy, the lower leaves have started to show signs of rust. Hollyhocks commonly have rust issues, but as they are a break in on-lived perennial (two to three years), this should not keep you from adding them to your garden. Try growing your hollyhocks in areas of the garden that are full sun and have tons of airflow. You can also try keeping the plants dry when watering by focusing your watering wand below the leaves. Sowing next spring before last frost is pre-eminent, but our late cool season might give you the opportunity to try sowing this year. Plants also will readily reseed themselves, so once you get them growing in a nice morsel in your garden, a plentiful hollyhock crop should come back year after year. The vegetable garden might start harboring pests at this time of year, specifically cabbage worms (Pieris rapae), a bad caterpillar that wreaks havoc on thriving cabbage family crops. The easiest and most organic way get rid of them is by handpicking them off your plants. It’s readily obtainable at garden centers. One more organic treatment is to wet the plants and sprinkle with cornmeal. The caterpillars will eat and swell until they die. A homemade sauce is a passable way to add different flavor to a boring piece of meat. Using fruit is an great way to add big flavor. Here’s a recipe for Peach BBQ Sauce. Cut 2 peaches in half, expel pit, brush with olive oil, and grill on medium heat until you get nice grill marks. Remove peaches from the grill and inhumanly chop. Drizzle a skillet with olive oil and saute 1 tablespoon minced garlic and half a small onion, diced. Whether you are looking for an icy, frozen lemonade or a brightly colored berry-infused drink or even an herb-enhanced concoction, there are dozens of recipes within reach. To make that Lavender Simple Syrup, combine 2 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 cups water and 3 tablespoons of dried lavender in a crestfallen bottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat, cover, and let the lavender nearly vertical in the syrup for 20 minutes. Strain and add food coloring if desired.
