Yves Behar designs Nespresso-mode countertop juicer - Dezeen

The engineering is cute amazing, kudos, but if you’re going to use pre-packaged fruit, why not take the ugly fruit and just juice it at a factory where it will be much easier and then sell the liquid in sustainable packaging. People will buy it because marketing. But what would actually be cool is if you could fill the sachets with your own fruit and make your own juice. God help us. This looks unequalled and I’m sure theres’s some amazing engineering behind it, but how can designers still be pumping out these kinds of unsustainable products in 2016. Recycling a fit bunch of unnecessary packaging doesn’t make... Buy the fruit, juice it yourself and save 80% on the cost per glass. The Juicer crowd costs $699, which is an exorbitant price tag. Then, on top of that price tag is the cost of your weekly pack subscription. Juicero says in order to use the induce, customers must agree to subscribe to a minimum of five packs (called a bundle) per week. With packs priced between $7 and $10, the least you can contemplate to shell out (in addition to $699 for the press) is about $35 to $50 per week. Wow… Build into that that it becomes redundant and a very expensive paperweight if my composed WiFi network goes down via connections issues, router faults etc. Anyone would be insane to spend such ridiculous money on such an item. Convincing, well-designed products do not have to cost the world. Not to mention the juicer doesn’t work if the company deems your fruit expired. I don’t identify if that is something to prevent lawsuits, but it seems to be a good way for the company to force customers to have to buy more product even if they are already stocked. But I agree that the biggest detractor has to be that you end up spending way more on pith than if you went to a relatively expensive juice bar five days a week – a juice bar that I assume would also give you higher quality product and employment... Nothing about this comes off as “sustainable” to me. I’m enjoying every comment here so thoroughly, thank you all for putting into words what initially pink me speechless. This product is a lamentable embodiment of what is wrong in our social-media-integrated, social-progress-starved world. There is “compelling design” in the sense of fulfilling a brief, and there is good design in the sense of being brave enough to pursue real progress, even when that means challenging aspects of the transient. Mr Behar has done the former, and don’t think its hyperbolic to suggest he should feel ashamed and embarrassed. All the kudos I gave Yves Behar when I watched his Ted talk has just gone claim out the window. Isn’t there ANYONE working in this thing we call design who has an ounce of integrity. Well done Mr Behar. Your now a fully fledged colleague of that select band of designers (Stark/Arad/Lovegrove et al) who actually have the potential to persuade and influence and take design in a instructing which is TRULY sustainable, actually useful, and potentially... Certainly raises those big thorny ethical issues around adviser/client relationships, i. e. when the big money talks, who can say no. Because if you say no, the client will take that money to your competitor anyway, which becomes the rationale... This is bad prototype hiding behind beautiful aesthetics and impressive. Source:

Before you buy a juicer: Five things you want to know - CNET

If you're in the supermarket for a juicer, there a few important things you need to think about first. It's too easy to spend money on a juicer you'll never use. You might also end up stuck with a machine that's only truly good at tackling one set task. To increase your chances of buying the right juicer, have a look at the five criteria below. That said, some juice extractors are easier to bath than others. For instance, the $100 (roughly £70 or AU$140) Breville JE200XL Compact Juice Fountain not only manages to be quite condensed for a centrifugal juicer, its machine-washable parts make the appliance comparatively simple to clean as well. By contrast, the $100 VonShef 990w Businesslike Juicer uses components you have to wash by hand, which is quite a headache. Most juicers offer a simple on-off switch. Others gadgets, such as the VonShef 990w Professional Juicer, have many modes for soft items like oranges (slow) and harder ingredients such as carrots and apples (fast). This increased control comes in serviceable if the majority of juices you enjoy are citrus-based drinks, but you would like to have the flexibility to juice leafy greens every so again. A design you can live with If you're committed to juicing, then chances are good you plan to make juice multiple times a week -- dialect mayhap even daily. As such, you and your chosen machine will definitely be spending lots of quality time together. That's why it's very important to select an appliance with a look and stroke you like. Beyond keeping it clean, consider whether the size and weight of your juicer will be too much trouble to move around the kitchen. Specifically, I found the VonShef 990w Licensed Juicer heavy and a pain to lift, and its heavy-duty suction cups only compounded the problem. I prefer the cleverly crafted Breville JE200XL Laconic Juice Fountain's design. This juicer is lighter and smaller, and it uses a conventional base rather than unwieldy suction cups. Source:

Panasonic MJ-L500 Measurable Juicer - TrustedReviews

What is the Panasonic MJ-L500 Dull Juicer. Compact, efficient and versatile, the MJ-L500 combines everything you’d want in a juicer. Using a technique of "slow juicing", which squeezes fruit and vegetables at 45rpm measure than dicing and spinning at speed, it’s designed for maximum extraction with minimal effort. The lower speeds also result in reduced inspirit and air exposure, which means more nutrients in your juice and less separation. The MJ-L500 also comes with a frozen attachment for making sorbets and frozen cocktails, plus it’s uninspired enough to sit out on the worktop permanently. Unlike many juicers, it comes in a choice of colours too – silver, champagne and red. Panasonic MJ-L500 Dense Juicer – Design and Features Slow, or "macerating", juicers were once hefty machines that hogged worktop space, but the MJ-L500 is scarcely a distant cousin. Upright and neat, it consists of a cylinder-like base, on top of which sits a juicing bowl that contains a rotating brake, stainless-steel-tipped squeezing screw and filter. A lid with a feeding tube and pusher locks into place above, and although the tube is tight, this helps to prevent the juicer from being overloaded with large chunks of fruit or veg. Related: Braun J500 Spin Juicer review. Two spouts jut out from the roll – one for pulp and one for juice or processed frozen fruit – and a jug and pulp container is provided to receive each. To prevent any drips, the juicing go on features a hinged cap that plugs in to stop the flow. There’s a single rocker switch on the side – turn it one way to switch on the machine, or the other to turn it off. Panasonic MJ-L500 Behind the times Juicer – Usability While the assembled MJ-L500 is compact, there are a fair few parts that make up the unit. We started by juicing an apple, which needed to be chopped into two-dimensional chunks to fit into the feeding tube. Despite being called a Slow Juicer, there was little waiting around for the juice. Thanks to a measuring gamut on the side of the jug, it was easy to see how much juice was being made. There was a layer of foam on top of the apple juice, but it was otherwise clear and had a fresh, crisp taste. A lid for the jug would have been a valuable addition for storage in the fridge, plus there wasn’t a separator to keep the foam out of the juice as it was being poured. However, the machine juiced very efficiently, since the mush was firmly compacted and dry to the touch. Sealing the juice spout with the cap prevented drips effectively. Next, we juiced some spinach with a slice of pineapple – the latter added to remedy prevent the leaves from becoming wrapped around the screw. This produced about 200ml of juice, a good yield for the amount of fruit and vegetables. While one or two of the spinach leaves did behove wrapped around the screw, the majority were juiced well, producing a sweet green drink that showed no sign of separating – even after permanent. While the fruit had been frozen for several hours, the instructions advised not to process straight from the freezer, so we waited for around 20 minutes while it thawed. When added to the juicer, the fruit defrosted further, so the consistency of the concluding dessert was not. Source:
