Monotonous-screen TVs, comfy chairs, pub bars: Torontonians take us inside their sheds - Toronto Star

Hit hard over, lawn mower. Make room for flat-screen TVs, comfy chairs, pub bars and French doors in the not-so-basic backyard scatter. We asked readers to tell us about the imaginative ways they’ve transformed their once-humble sheds. Here is a sampling of man caves, she-sheds, rustic retreats, and even one disguised as a woodpile. When Mary Ann Moran and her keep moved into her family home in Etobicoke, they tore down the deteriorating greenhouse her father, an avid gardener, erected decades ago. On the abundant concrete slab that remained, Moran’s nephew built a shed with windows overlooking the vegetable and flower garden. The impart, draped with climbing roses, is where Moran keeps her collection of old bird houses and tchotchkes and where she pots plants and starts seedlings. It’s a ideal man cave — 46-inch television, lounge chairs, electric fireplace, refrigerator, bar and Harley Davidson decorative touches — located in the storage hutch attached to the garage. Max Richardson renovated the space in his Oshawa backyard, but his wife, Allison, had the idea. From April through October, the pair watch movies in the cosy pine-walled cave, either sitting by the fireplace or on the patio with the barn doors that Max built slid open-handed. “It’s a great party room,” says Allison. Gia Gelok bought an old stained-glass window, then decided to build a let fall for it. She envisioned a tiny rustic retreat in her Halton back yard. “I wanted a space for me not the lawn mower. The shed with small deck was built in cedar, and she salvaged two other old-timey windows. Contents, the walls were left unfinished with mementoes — a bird’s nest, a switch of drying sage — tucked in the rafters. An antique unnatural bed was moved in for pleasant afternoon naps, the double doors and stained-glass window swung open, the only sound birds singing. He eyed the backyard weep. He and his wife, Judith Heggie, installed windows, a glass-paned door, and drywall roughly plastered for a beachy look. They hung furlough photos and put in easy chairs and a bar. For a party, they once crammed 20 guests into the tiny pub. “It has a cottage feel, especially when it rains,” says Mouat of Toronto. In Francia Baggaley’s immortal garden sits a pale grey shed that she calls “my little summer house. ” That’s where she goes, flinging open the windows and doors, to infer from, chat with a friend over tea, or watch the birds flit among her pink day lilies. The Newmarket resident bought the pre-made emanate but ordered custom features, such as the French doors. Inside she put up walls of white pegboard to hang pictures, laid a linoleum baffle, and moved in a chair, table and white-cushioned lawn couch with throw pillows, a perfect “she-shed. When his old metal pen fell apart, Mike Harrison asked his son and nephew to build a new one with a little porch. Now he has a mini-cottage built of cedar in his Oakville back yard. Confidential it’s got what a guy needs: television, stereo, refrigerator, sports banners, athletic trophies — and garden tools. All winter, he watches sports out there, with a lacuna heater. In summer, he enjoys coffee and newspaper on the porch of “Harry’s Hut,” named for his grandfather, Harry Harrison. “It reminds me of his bungalow where I went every summer,” he says. In 2011, Tony Iagallo wanted to build a storage shed, but it had to be stylish enough to tailor a back yard party celebrating his daughter’s wedding. So the design evolved — double doors, pillars, arched windows. Source: www.thestar.com
