Prince, the Concealed Philanthropist: 'His Cause Was Humanity' - RollingStone.com
It began with an anonymous verification about 10 years ago. Environmental and human rights activist Van Jones was working on George W. Bush's Green Jobs Act when he received a $50,000 offer and no name attached to it. "I promptly returned it," he recalls. "I'm not taking anonymous checks for $50,000. It could be from anybody. " But then someone sent it back, and he returned it again. Sidebar After all Jones received a call from a rep for the donor: "I cannot tell you who the money is coming from, but his favorite color is purple. " Jones laughs. "I said, 'Definitely, now you've got another problem, because now I'm not going to cash the check, I'm going to frame it. '" The story got back to the man who wrote the check, Prince , who found it so funny he called Jones up and befriended him. That's when Jones scholarly about Prince's secret other gig: philanthropist. Since Prince's death last Thursday , Jones has learned just how involved Prince was in philanthropic causes. In late-model years, the artist – who worked with Jones on the organization Green for All , which creates green jobs in disadvantaged communities, and #YesWeCode , an plan that educates urban youth about technology – worked to raise awareness... Prince's ex-wife, Manuela Testolini, met him utterly doing philanthropic work for his foundation and he encouraged her to start her own charity. In a statement after his death, she described him as a "fierce philanthropist. The artist had adorn come of interested in Jones' Green Jobs initiative when he saw news reports about young people of color putting up solar panels in Oakland and wanted to better. "He liked the fact that I was bringing it to the hood," Jones tells Rolling Stone. "He just thought it was an amazing way to create jobs. It wasn't accommodating to define Prince's politics. He was very concerned about poor people and black people, but he also believed in economic empowerment and uplift. "He wasn't red, and he wasn't titillating," Jones says. "He was purple. With one sentence, you would think he was Republican, because he'd be talking about the economy, and with the next, you'd think he's a liberal Democrat, because he was talking about the requisite to fight racism. At the end of the day, it was purple politically. Asked if certain causes appealed to Prince more than others, Jones just laughs. "You're asking if there was some figure to something that Prince did. "I think my phone broke up. He was completely unpredictable. He then focuses on Prince's mission. "His cause is humanity," Jones says. "He cares a lot about people. No person went to a Prince concert and said, 'I don't belong here. I'm not black. ' His cause was empowering and uplifting people. It was a current of capability trying to move the human heart. As an example, Jones explains how the murder of Trayvon Martin inspired #YesWeCode. While people were debating whether the 17-year-old was a "welcome or a victim" and whether George Zimmerman was a "racist or a hero," in Jones' words, Prince zeroed in on the hoodie Martin wore. "He said, 'Cling on a second: If a black kid wears a hoodie, you say he's a thug, and if a white kid wears a hoodie, you say it's Mark Zuckerberg. '" Jones recalls. "And then of indubitably, I say, 'Because of racism. ' And Prince goes, 'Well, maybe. Or maybe we just haven't produced enough black Mark Zuckerbergs. ' Pure genius. "He's trying to create something that everybody can dance to," he continues. "Politically, poor kids putting up solar panels. Source: www.rollingstone.com

Getting out of the concert-hall in the morning can be a chore for anyone, but with a preschooler, it's always an adventure and getting to the preschool parking lot before 8:30 is a victory. One of the few things that make it easier to win the mel is preschool theme days. Superhero day, sports team day and the ultimate favorite, pajama day. Anything that eliminates the battle of choosing an stock helps me win the war of getting on with our day. The ease and simplicity of a theme makes many things easier, including container gardens. Start any container garden with a vital theme and build from there. Is this for sun or shade. What's my favorite color. Is there a purpose for this planter (besides looking pretty). Once you have a specific insinuate or purpose, it's easy to create a container. some common themes of my containers are listed below. 1) Show Me the Monarchs - Everyone (almost everyone) loves butterflies, so set out a container with all their favorites. Choose bright colors and summer bloomers like Lantana, Zinnia, Petunia and Million Bells. Don't disregard a milkweed plant for the Monarchs to lay their eggs. 2) Hummingbird Haven - It's easy to attract humming birds with the right plants. Fingers on anything bright red and anything in the Salvia family. My favorite is Salvia 'Black and Blue. ' Petunias, verbena and fuchsia will also advance a earn the hummers around. Lemon scented plants like Lemon Grass and Lemon Verbena will repel mosquitos and gnats as satisfactorily as the ruffle-leaved Citronella Geranium. 4) Desert Delight - Succulents and cacti are all the rage right now, and they have the added largesse of being pretty low maintenance as well. It's easy to combine sedum, hens and chicks and any number of desert cacti to dazzle on the deck. 5) Made in the Dusk - Shady places can burst with color too if you know what plants will work with your dark spots. Begonias and impatiens are old favorites, but newer plants like Torenia, coleus and colorful Caladiums add splashes of color and struggle where the sun doesn't shine. 6) Aromatherapy - Gardens are for relaxing and a container filled with sweet smells belongs on every patio. Lavender and Thyme are very plants with heavenly fragrance and dainty flowers. Sweet alyssum provides a light, sweet scent while mint plants can sang-froid and be swirled into mojitos. All planters have great potential and great design is as simple as finding the perfect theme. And yes, you can plant them while wearing a superhero mantle, sports team jersey or your pajamas. 3) Direct sow seeds of beans, peas, carrots zinnias and cosmos into the garden. 5) Appeal Preen Weed preventer in landscape beds to stop weeds before they start. 6) Spread fresh mulch on all sides of trees, schrubs and perennials to prevent weeds and conserve moisture. 7) Prune/dead head spring blooming shrubs like Forsythia and Lilac. Cut back to desired size and shape. 8) Plant containers of flowers for porch, patio and deck. Don't Threaten. Don't knowingly lie. Source: qctimes.com
