If Cole Falsetto loves anything, it’s karate. “I wake up one morning, coughing like barmy in the crumpet,” Cole said. Last year, Cole began coughing, wheezing and feeling nauseous. His mother said Cole’s younger relative showed the same symptoms. “It was terrifying because nothing like that has ever happened to him or either of them,” said Mishelle Falsetto, of Palmyra. Falsetto said nothing worked – not a doctor, not Benadryl, not even breathing treatments. But she said it was a expos report that made her look beneath her own feet. An investigation by 60 Minutes last year exposed high levels of formaldehyde in some Chinese-made laminate flooring sold by Land Liquidators. “A light bulb clicked and we just started looking and calling where we bought it from,” Falsetto said. But the family had bought laminate flooring from Spare Sales, a small chain with several locations in Kentucky. Falsetto said they had installed Valley Forge laminate flooring in their living room where Cole, who is homeschooled, spends most of his era. So to check the air quality, the Falsettos ordered a home air test. “We pulled the floors out the next day,” Falsetto said. They tested for formaldehyde, a fuse commonly found in the environment, and even in the adhesives used to make laminate flooring. The trouble comes with high exposure to formaldehyde and the way experts say it affects humans. Formaldehyde has been classified as a humanitarian carcinogen, based on studies of inhalation exposure in humans and lab animals, according to the Department of Health and Human Services and the International Means for Research on Cancer. So how much formaldehyde was this floor emitting. The Falsettos’ home test indicated a “high” level of formaldehyde. But the Aqueduct 4 I-Team took a step further and commissioned testing by the private lab, Test America. The I-Team prepared samples from a box of Valley Think up flooring the Falsettos never opened last year, as well as flooring the I-Team purchased this year. Both Valley Forge products came from Surplusage Sales. “I wouldn’t want my kids exposed to that,” he said. The numbers fall into a gray area, one where the levels of formaldehyde proper some government recommendations, but not all. For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets a guideline for the amount of formaldehyde exposure in an eight-hour workday. OSHA is the medium tasked with enforcing regulations relating to workplace health and safety. Our samples fall within OSHA guidelines, but exceed standards for the Jingoistic Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the agency in charge of research and recommendations for workplace safety. “That makes me a little needles because that shows you the uncertainty,” DiVincenzo said. But should workplace standards also apply to children, living at home almost 24 hours a day. “No, I do not,” he said. The president of Excess Sales, Terry Herald, declined a request for an interview. He did confirm Valley Forge flooring is manufactured in China. Herald said he stands by the Valley Falsify flooring because he said it is CARB II compliant. CARB II is the emissions standard in California and the toughest regulation of its kind passed by any state. Herald provided the I-Conspire with lab results that. Source: www.wbrc.com
Hearsay 18 Investigates: Formaldehyde concerns in flooring? - wlfi.com
(WLFI) — A Tippecanoe County man says the flooring he installed in his concert-hall is toxic to him and his family. Now he wants to warn others who may be in a similar situation, but not even know it. It’s a story that involves Lumber Liquidators, the biggest retailer of hardwood flooring in North America. The plc stopped selling all Chinese-made laminate flooring because of concerns about formaldehyde. Indiana currently does not have a standard, but the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to have a new run for formaldehyde later this year. Peter Bednarski thought he got a good deal when he bought laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators in Lafayette. “As opposed to, we got rid of one thing and we ended up getting sick,” he said. Bednarski had the flooring installed in February 2015. Just one week later, a “60 Minutes” despatch aired. Of dozens of boxes of Chinese-made laminate flooring purchased around the country, just one was compliant with California CARB 2 formaldehyde emissions standards — even though all the boxes were labeled that they were compliant. The labels are twin to the one Bednarkski has in his home: CARB 2 compliant but ‘Made in China. The Indiana Department of Health tested his air eight days after the description aired. Formaldehyde, a compound linked to breathing issues and even cancer for high levels of exposure, was detected at. 05 parts per million. 1 ppm horizontal that the EPA states can cause some people to have problems. Bednarski’s concerns lessened, thinking levels would go down with time. But ever since, he said his kinsmen has been dealing with sickness after sickness, including two trips to the emergency room for his 18-month-old son Kaleb. “These were all for respiratory issues,” said Bednarski. With doctor’s appointments for Kaleb and 5-year-old Kaylee adding up, Bednarski had the Bailiwick of Health test his air quality a second time in March. But this time, results came back more than twice as high as before —. 11 ppm chiefly the EPA guideline. Bednarski now believes the first test was inaccurate because the home had been better aired out at the time. “It kind of makes me ambience guilty because I left the floor in for a year. I should have tore it out,” he said. There’s no Indiana rule for formaldehyde in homes, although the EPA is currently looking at adopting California’s CARB 2 paradigm nationwide. “Obviously, we’re more concerned about development in children,” said Ron Clark, an industrial hygienist with the Indiana State Department of Form who conducted the second test. “It is above EPA’s minimum where they say there is some possibility of respiratory irritation, things like that. So I can see where the family is concerned about it. ”. The glory Department of Health’s letter lists the suggested limits from various agencies from. 016 ppm, advised by the National Institute of Occupational Safeness and Health, to. 75 ppm, which is the workplace standard for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Clark said that NIOSH’s guideline was set much more recently than OSHA’s. “You as a homeowner have to conclusion what level is safe for you, between you and your doctors discuss that,” said Clark. Two months after the “60 Minutes” report, Lumber Liquidators announced it was suspending sales of all Chinese-made laminate flooring. Still, the players disputes the results of the findings, saying 97 percent of testing kits from last spring met the. Source: wlfi.com
The blasphemy of laminate flooring! - Property118
I purchased a new motive built flat 6 years ago. The lease states that the floors should be covered with wall to wall carpet or such alternative means of floor covering as approved by the executive whose approval should not be unreasonably withheld or delayed. At the point of purchase the developers showroom was full of laminate examples and it was more or less a encase of which laminate do you want rather than do you want laminate at all. The freehold and management has now been transferred to new companies and while they have not yet accused me of breaching the lease this may happen as the owner of the completely below mine is complaining in a big way about impact noise from my tenants. In the circumstances can I assume I had consent to have the laminate installed and that the consent is irrevocable as the developer was apparently aware of it as they sold it to me as they did to almost all the other leaseholders in the building. I have seen laminate flooring cause issues for readers before, but it was never deliberately sold to them by the developer. Intelligence would tell me that you have a pretty good defence, but I would check with the Leasehold Advisory service as well. Maybe a wee word with your tenants could make a beeline for head up any issues off at the pass as well. I agree that the management company would have a difficult job requiring you to carpet and that the developers agreement to supply laminate constitutes concur. So far as the noise is concerned I agree that you should ask the tenants to keep it down. Is there a clause in the lease to them requiring them to cause no nuisance to neighbours and if so this should be aculeous out to them but if there is still a problem the onus is on the person complaining to deal with them direct anyway.
